It is a realization isn’t it? To be happy… We first really learn about the term ‘happy’ from when we were born. As a kid, you sing “if you’re happy and you know it clap your hands”. What is happy? It is a delightful, pleased feeling characterized by contentment, pleasure and joy. So the dictionary says anyway…

The things is, as I get older, the simpler my goal is. One of which is to simply be happy and getting there can be a tricky pickle. Some find it in all sorts of different and complicated ways thinking that they are held hostage to the circumstances and thus it lead them nowhere near where they want to be. The grass is always greener on the other side right? No, not really.

Sooner or later, we have to understand that chasing lights isn’t the way. We have to realize that happiness is an emotion we need to consciously choose upon every day. It’s not an easy task as it requires us to be strong. Once we do, we can begin to truly experience the happiness we have been seeking all along.

Here are some ways you can adopt every day to take control of your own happiness:

1. Practice Gratitude.

Appreciate what you already have, as its value will only flourish when you do. Basking in the little positive moments enhances your experiences and sense of gratitude towards yourself and life itself. Make it a habit to consciously practice gratitude and savor the moment as it refocuses the perception of our experiences. Trust me, count your blessings. It goes a long way to get you to the state of mind you ultimately desire.

Too often we tend to take the easy way out by dwelling on the negative. If we can’t change our situation we might as well accept it and embrace the positive. We can’t see the future but we can choose to influence how we want to live it. It isn’t easy as we aren’t naturally ingrained to do so but embracing the positive can only allow you to find that happiness from within. It’s a day-to-day practice which can become your best habit yet.

3. Surround Yourself With The Right People.

Relationships you have with people should never ever hurt you. They don’t have to be exactly like you as differences should make the relationship flourish. Be with like-minded people who love and respect you just as much as you do, people who make your day a little brighter and people who make you laugh and cry with joy. Free yourself from people who suck the happiness out of you; so you can free yourself to be the best YOU that you want. No one else can live YOU like you do.

4. Take Care Of Your Body.

Your health is one of the primary factors that will affect your mental well-being. Your mental, emotional and spiritual energy relies heavily on your body and how you care for it. Taking care of your body by eating well and taking on healthy activities can significantly raise your state of happiness. Studies have shown that people who adopt a healthy lifestyle are less likely to fall into depression as it goes a long way towards your self-esteem and self-accomplishment. Take care of your body and it will take care of you.

5. Forgive Others, Forgive Yourself.

Make the most of your today and make the most of what you are to yourself.

6. Embrace What Is Coming Next.

Accept the past, be thankful for the present and embrace the future. Tomorrow is a new day with a whole new opportunity that comes along with it. Smile, embrace it and keep your head up. You’re strong enough to go forward and you’re definitely strong enough to do so with a smile on your face.

There will be days when it simply feels impossible and all you want to do is take the easy way out by lashing out or crawl under the covers for hours. Take it all in and make a choice. What are you going to do about it? What are you going to do to be happy? Happiness is a choice- so choose to be happy. Consciously practice it and soon it will become you. It’s right there. It’s all in your hands and under your control. Choose to want to ride the best of the waves.
