Why The Clothing Label Shouldn’t Matter, Your Happiness Should

Please believe me when I say how much I love fashion, but also believe me when I say that keeping up with the latest trends is not going to drastically change your mood or impact your day-to-day life.

I'm sure we all have those select people in our lives, or maybe it’s even you, who are obsessed with the latest fashion collections or trends, and it's hard to blame them for it. It's fun to be fashionable and looking your best can also help make you feel your best.

However, it's often easy to associate being fashionable with being happy, and here is where I seriously disagree. It is so easy to get caught up in the latest Hollywood trends, what celebrities are wearing on Instagram and what fashion bloggers are modeling in their latest post.

I completely get it, and I want to look good just as much as the next person, but looking good and being happy does not necessarily mean you have to spend $600 on one pair of shoes.

Many of us want to keep up with the trends in order to feel accepted because we associate acceptance with happiness. This makes sense, but what a lot of us may miss, is that these trends are not beneficial to ourselves.

Looking good or feeling fashionable goes way beyond the label or superficial meaning behind something being sold. It's so frustrating when people I know tell me they will only wear designer brands or something that's super expensive, simply because they think that this is what's cool, thus will make them happier. Yes, sometimes high-end products do mean better quality but that's very rarely why people are buying the $600 shoes I mentioned earlier.

The clothing label should not matter. What should matter is how you feel when you wear that clothing. It's not about being the fanciest or "best," it should be about whether or not you feel awesome in what you are wearing.

Realistically, most of us cannot afford to keep up with the major trends or buy the big name labels. How happy would we really feel if we spent the same amount on an outfit as we did on rent?

Trust me, you do not need to wear a $200 pair of jeans to boost your self-confidence. The jeans are not going to make you feel better about yourself in the long run. They may help you get a ton of Instagram likes, but the only person who can make you feel good at the end of the day is YOU.

Let me reiterate that I think it's great to look your best because I really do believe that this impacts your mood. What I don't think is important is sending yourself into debt or wasting money on items because the media has told us that they are THE coolest. We can decide what's coolest, what looks good and what makes us happy. Since when did we need anyone else to determine that for us?

I know how easy it is to get swept up in the hype of a Prada bag or desperately crave a pair of Tory Burch flats, but look at this from a bigger picture. You can get a similar bag or pair of shoes just about anywhere without feeling like you just spent a fortune, and you will undoubtedly look just as good.
